Two devastating earthquakes
On June 24, two major earthquakes struck western Venezuela within seconds of each other. The larger measured magnitude 7.5 — the most powerful the country has recorded in more than 125 years, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. More than 1,719 people have been confirmed dead and more than 46,000 remain missing. Buildings have collapsed in Caracas and across several states, a national state of emergency is in place, and search-and-rescue is underway.
Families have lost their homes and everything in them. They need shelter, clean water and basic supplies right now.
How CLWR is responding
CLWR is responding through our partner Lutheran World Federation, and their local partners that were already at work across Colombia and Venezuela. They have people and supply lines in the region — which means your gift supports a response that's already moving, not one waiting to begin.
LWF has conducted an initial needs assessment and is already at work distributing emergency food kits and shelter packages containing blankets, flashlights, hygiene items and essential household supplies.
Venezuela is not unfamiliar ground for us. CLWR has worked through LWF on the country's long humanitarian crisis, supporting families displaced by it. We know the partner, and the partner knows the context.
We are working now to help people survive the crisis. Then we stay to help them recover and rebuild.
